Work in Progress: Sunday 19th February

Taking advantage of some bright sunny weather today, a few L & B volunteers of the unofficial "Friends of Chelfham Station" group enjoyed a useful day working on the trackbed and lineside tree clearance near the station and continuing the tidying up and removal of the laurel trees successfully carried out recently during the January working weekend.

1. The most important job was to maintain a fire in the lounge and enjoy the lunch and tea breaks. Brian Pullen, John O'Dell, Martin Andrews and Nigel Thompson pose for the camera (taken by Serena Pullen)

2. From the original window in the kitchen, plenty of bird activity is evident on the feeders despite their loss of cover after last months removal of the laurel behind and on the bank here.

3. The mornings work resulted in a trailer load of cut logs ready to be despatched.

4. After lunch the gang continue cutting down some small trees overhanging the trackbed in the Bratton Fleming direction away from the station.

5. Martin Andrews and a 'zoomed in' view looking back towards Chelfham Station.

6. Nigel Thompson perches on the bank whilst cutting down some overhanging laurel.

7. John O'Dell and Brian Pullen cut up a fallen tree across the trackbed.

8. As more light now gets in to the trackbed, one can clearly see the slight curve of the route looking back to the station.

9. More piles by the lineside await the next round of bonfires as the route north is exposed. The caravan on the trackbed marks the boundary where the L & B's land is briefly bisected by our neighbours at Valley Cottage.

Further lineside tree clearance at Chelfham is an ongoing project. Occasional work parties this spring should see more progress as the site is tidied after years of neglect. Although most of the "Friends" volunteers at Chelfham are also regulars at Woody Bay, we would welcome any newcomers who could bring along their own skills and enthusiasm to continue the project.
