Work in Progress - Easter Weekend, 2009

Apr

2009

To some people Easter, is a time to go to church to remember the cruxification and resurrection of Jesus. To others it is a time for eating Hot Cross Buns and Chocolate Eggs. To some it is to take a walk in the countryside, visit the seaside or enjoy the thrills of a Theme Park. It may also be a time to catch up with the decorating of that spare room or to carry out various projects in the garden.

Despite a very poor weather day at Woody Bay, progress continued indoors within the new shed extension. The shed floor area in the extension will be concreted soon and some of the gang were tasked with installing the full shuttering around.

Meanwhile, two wagons in the shed were worked on: Ex MOD bogie flat (being converted to a replica of L&B bogie open No.12) had some of the wooden tongue and groove sides cut to length and fitted, and Bogie Open No. 54 had a new section of planks prepared to replace the damaged and rotting floor.

With improving weather today as the early mist gradually departed, the "Thursday Gang" constructed the wooden fence and path leading to the visitors' shed viewing area. In the morning, part of the gang carted several wheelbarrow loads of stone and dust to form the path, whilst others secured wooden rails onto the rail posts which had been installed last week.

The main work today for the Thursday Gang was to install several old rails as fence posts in the ground in a line above the bank to form the shed viewing area for the visitors. The holes were dug and the rails cut to length before being dropped into place, lined and levelled and then cemented in. A works train brought the sand & aggregate mix alongside the site.

The very active Wednesday group of volunteers are also working on a variety of projects to maintain and enhance the railway's presence at Woody Bay.

Mothers' Day

2009

After a week of bright and sunny early spring weather, the L&B  operated over the weekend for the Mother's Day specials. AXE with the 3 carriages performed faultlessly.

On Sunday, the good weather brought out the visitors - many with their mothers in tow to claim their free ride. The final passenger journey count for the day was 230,with both gift shop and catering recording healthy sales figures.

Look out for details of the L&Bs next Special Event...

The main task today for the Thursday gang was to demolish and remove the temporary toilets from site. These buildings had served us well as the disabled and ladies toilets from 2003-2008 but have now been superseded by the permanent toilet block which was completed recently. Exmoor National Park planning agreement had required the toilet cabins to be removed as soon as possible.
