Rolling Stock

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway was always known for its distinctive locomotives and carriages, all built to high standards.

Most of the original rolling stock was destroyed when the line closed in 1935, consequently the revived railway for the moment uses smaller and lighter locomotives and carriages.

However, this is only a temporary measure until the heritage rolling stock which is being built is complete.  CLICK HERE to read of our Heritage Coach Project and HERE to read of the building of a replica L&B engine.

Although four of the original locos were cut up fro scrap 1935, there was at one survivor…

Follow the links for more information about our current rolling stock:
And if you are interested in aspects of modelling the Lynton & Barnstaple, see our modelling page.

Our Loading Gauge

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway is described as a nominal 2ft gauge railway, but our gauge is actually just under this at 600mm (the same as several other narrow gauge railways including the Ffestiniog and the Vale of Rheidol).

Our rolling stock has a back to back set between 21" - 21.5". Our tightest clearance on the line is 44" from track centre.
