Locomotives of Quality

Locomotives of Quality

This book reflects John Simpson’s enthusiasm for Manning Wardle - the Leeds company universally renowned as builders of high-quality locomotives, including four of those supplied to the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.

The book sketches the history of earlier designs and constructions that led onto the formation of the firm at the Boyne Engine Works in Leeds. It then goes on to detail their many industrial locomotives, and the early locos for use on light railways. There were also many unconventional products which are also covered in this book.
Of the two thousand engines built, about four hundred were exported, and could be found all over the world. The author, who has been assiduously tracking down these engines over many years, provides us with a very readable account of their general history.

At the end, he deals with all the engines preserved in eleven countries, some just on display and others working. The book is excellently illustrated with the author’s own photographs, together with contributions from other major collections.
