Beer Festival Weekend

The 2008 June Beer Festival weekend at Woody Bay Station, part of the North Devon Festival, made for an enjoyable and successful event.

The weekend was well attended, with a significant number of visitors returning for two or even all three days. The event attracted several visitors to the railway and to North Devon from faily long distances across the country, who came especially to sample the ales and watch the music having seen the event advertised. We were also pleased to see quite a number of local members of the community taking part over the weekend and who were all very keen on coming back in the future.

We had 6 ales on sale this year, the winner of which was Lundy Gold from Ilfracombe's Wizard Brewery.

We would like to thank North Devon CAMRA and Chris Franks for helping with the ale and also Pete and Julia Snashell for their work behind the bar, Bill Leadbetter and Jim and Kate Pounds for the fantastic effort on the Barbeque. Also thanks to those playing music - The Alchemists, Douglas E Powell, Unnamed Heroes, Heddon Valley Stumblers and Lazy - there was something there for everyone and some definitely gained several new fans!

Thanks most of all to the visitors who came and supported the railway. The weekend raised an additional £700 after costs on top of normal operating income - all of which will help go towards improvements and expansion of the railway.

A hive of activity around Parracombe School's Mint Club table Hannah Walters arrives at Woody Bay as the railway's first commuter

As an aside, the weekend also saw a first for the new railway in its first commuter! Hannah Walters (pictured), age 7 from Parracombe, was working on the school's Mint Club sales stand at the event and travelled to work for the day by train from Killington Lane. Great to see the Mint Club at the station on the weekend and good to see them doing such a roaring trade!
