Work in Progress - 10th December

A bit later than usual, but Thursday evening, our "roving reporter" Nigel had 'a date' and with a squash match on Friday evening as well as lots of work/deliveries in the usual busy run up to Christmas, it all got a bit delayed.

Three gangs at work this week with some volunteers working at Woody Bay in the shed on carriage 4 and the 7.25" gauge garden railway whilst other volunteers spent the morning with Martyn Budd in superb bright weather down at Killington Lane.

Photos and commentary: Nigel Thompson

1. Finishing off the new siding at Killington Lane - levelling, jacking and packing.

2. This siding will be used for ballast and rail loading/unloading, wagon storage.  Retained is the transhipment end-on loading dock for any rolling stock delivered or despatched using flat bed lorries.

3. The jacking here was a first chance to use the recently acquired new hydraulic track jacks.

4. The works train with HEDDON HALL and wagons shunted into the new siding for the first time.

5. Scrap screws, fixings and short rails were loaded into the digger's bucket for transfer into the skip on the flat wagon.

6. In the glorious Exmoor winter scenery, HEDDON HALL with the works train at a photo stop en route back to Woody Bay for lunch.

7. More progress on the 7.25" gauge garden railway with an area dug out for the covered storage of rolling stock by the water tank.

8. The line will turn back towards the Water Tank giving an opportunity to clear and tidy up the gardening storage site.

9. Alistair Hall erects a screening fence in the woodland by the Water Tank.

10. Stuart Wells on the small mobile excavator which has been very useful in digging out the route of the garden railway.

11. Everything is in place at Woody Bay station for the Santa Specials.

12. On the platform 'Santa' prepares to greet the expected visitors.
