Surrey Support Group at Merstham Model Steam Show 21st/22nd May 2011

The Surrey Support Group took their Sales Stand to the Merstham Model Steam Show over the weekend of 21st/22nd May. The show was not particularly well attended and our sales were only modest. Even with the benefit of being accompanied by Paul Gower and his second-hand books, by late Sunday afternoon it became obvious that after deducting the stand fee from our takings we had made only a very small profit.

Chris Dadson unleashed a new fund-raising initiative on the unsuspecting public visiting the show. While at the Snapper Halt site the previous weekend, he noticed pieces of track ballast laying on the former trackbed as a result of it having been scraped clear of vegetation. The material was obviously a leftover from 1935 when the railway was closed by the Southern Railway. Realising the fund-raising potential, with the kind permission of the Directors of Exmoor Associates, a number of pieces were collected. After washing each piece in soapy water, and then bagging them individually into transparent plastic bags along with a printed note stating that the item would be exchanged for a contribution of £2.50 which would be used to help finance one of the ongoing projects underway at the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. Within a period of just 4-hours on Sunday we successfully solicited contributions for all ten (10) pieces of ballast taken to the show. Following this initial success, agreement has already been obtained from the Directors of Exmoor Associates allowing us to continue this fund-raising initiative.
