I have always had an interest in railways particularly in narrow gauge lines so on retirement I contacted Dave Tooke about volunteering on the L&B. He immediately invited me to join the Thursday track gang (The Geriatric Squad). On arrival I was made to feel really welcome by everybody and was surprised to discover just how much this gang achieved each week. I must say it was hard work for one who has never raised a shovel in anger. I have now been a regular on at least each Thursday for the last 18 months and I must say it has given me considerable enjoyment seeing progress made watching the railway grow. The Thursday gang is now renamed the Thursday Fit Club where you can get all the benefits of the Gym for none of the cost and an excellent mix of both young and old who are all capable of moving mountains while having a good laugh at the same time. The camaraderie is exceptional. I am now looking after the permanent way on the extension to Killington Lane and would really welcome any other volunteers who may feel they would like to have a day in the open air. I can assure you there is something for everybody and training will be provided where required.
