RDA unable to assist funding of L&B expansion

It is today being reported that our project to expand the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway will not get funding from the South West Regional Development Agency.

A gang of over 20 volunteers turned up to continue the land clearance at Parracombe, with many from the Isle of Wight Railway, the Talyllyn Railway and the L&B Dorset Group joining local members.

Surrey Group Show Report

This weekend marks the Surrey Group Exhibition Stand's last outing for this year. I would like to give many thanks to all those who have assisted with manning the stand during the year. At this point it is worth reflecting on our achievements for the year.

I was surprised to discover that we have actually attended ten shows this year. In addition to raising awareness of the L&B project in the South London Area, we have also been able to provide significant financial support to the developments at Woody Bay in the following ways:

Work in Progress - 29th November

A large team of volunteers is at work in North Devon this weekend.  The group comprises local members, plus a party from the Isle of Wight, and a further gang of Talyllyn members. The main job for the weekend is clearance of our land between Parracombe Lane and Cricket Field Lane, which will allow survey work to start here.

A very wet and miserable day for the volunteers on the Thursday Group at Woody Bay. However work must go on and today we were tasked with the regauging of two left-hand turnouts (points).

Local MP Backs L&B!

NORTH Devon MP Nic Harvey has promised to help the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway Trust gain funding for expansion.

The trust announced plans last year to extend the line from its base at Woody Bay, which was expected to cost around £29 million, with the prospect of adding £70 million to the local economy within the first five years of opening.

L & B Volunteers lay track at Torrington Station

 On Thursday 20th November several L & B volunteers took a break from the outdoor work at Woody Bay to assist the new Tarka Valley Railway Group at Torrington Station on the Tarka Trail (old railway line from Barnstaple to Meeth). At Torrington the group is proposing to reinstate some of the original track layout through the station towards Bideford and with future plans to open to the public offering train rides providing scenic views of the adjacent river Torridge.

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Meteorological Office is pleased to announce that regularly updated weather reports for both Lynton and Barnstaple are now available online.

The service is text only at present, but it is hoped that graphics will be available shortly. Just click on the required location in the Today's weather box in the left-hand menu.  Weather data is provided courtesy of the BBC and The Met Office.

Work in Progress - Thursday 13th November

After the hectic and busy days earlier this week with AXE's dedication and the Armistice, the Thursday outdoor gang continued with the necessary enhancement work. With several contractors and volunteers now fitting out the toilet block, the regulars were tasked with the fitting of the wooden railings to the rail-built fence posts installed last week. Working in typical November Exmoor weather (rain and drizzle!), the gang used the smaller marquee as a movable shelter as they worked alongside the loading dock.
