Kent Group

The North Kent Area Group was formed in March 2002 aimed at enthusiasts and supporters of the railway living in Dartford and the surrounding area, to support the L&B Trust in it's efforts to restore, reopen and operate what is possibly the most famous narrow gauge railway in Britain.

In 2008, the Kent Group became "perchance, sleeping", although many continued to support the efforts in North Devon on an individual basis.

Formally approved by the Trustees in November 2013, the Kent Group has now re-awakened, and will be attending various railway and modelling events throughout the county, with a new, innovative, L&B-themed display stand. We also hope to arrange for an illustrated talk on the L&B, at a local venue, and to which all will be welcome.

If you are interested in joining us, in finding out more about the group, or if you hear of any local events we could attend, then please get in touch:

(image right): Pictured outside the garage where it was built, this half-scale, L&B four-ton, four-wheel open wagon No. 1, as built in 1898 with top-hung doors, is about the same size as a standard display table at exhibitions etc. and will form the basis of the Kent Group display stand for 2014. Designed and Built by Kent L&B Member Anne Belsey, The wagon (which provides storage shelves at the rear, as well as the display top) and "LYNTON" running-in board fits into an average estate car, and can be easily assembled by one person slotting the parts together without any screws, bolts or other fixings. The "ballast" is painted polystyrene.)

Kent Group Report: Deal Show

Aug

2014

The L&B Kent Group exhibition stand was on the road again at the weekend, this time for the Deal Model Railway Show at The Astor Theatre. One might think a model railway show in a theatre is a bit unusual. Well, I've never been to one before, and I can see why! The Victorian venue describes itself as "a unique multi purpose arts centre offering an eclectic mix of music, theatre, literary events, art exhibitions, films and a range of classes and clubs for all ages and tastes. Our aim is to offer 'Something for Everyone!'"

Kent Group Report: Dunkirk Show

May
31
2014

The first 2014 outing of the L&B Kent Group exhibition stand took place at Dunkirk (the village in Kent - not France!) on 31st May.

A gentle introduction to the art of supporting the L&B at exhibitions, this was a small local show, organised by the East Kent Model Railway Society (Whitstable) with just six layouts (two were narrow gauge, and one was both narrow and standard gauge), one trade stand, one "society stand" (that was us!) plus a video of the club's own 20ft-long layout, and refreshments.

2013

The L&B EAST Group brought their area group stand to the Expo-NG Model Railway Exhibition in Swanley, Kent on Saturday, 26th October. Two Kent members - Martyn de Young and Anne Belsey - were also on hand to discuss the possibilities of reforming the Kent Group.  Anne has recently built a display stand, based on a half-scale 4-ton open wagon, for the Kent Group, and which we hope to take to various model and full-scale railway events in the county during 2014.

The Kent Group stirreth

Sep
17
2013

After a period of several years, when the North Kent Group "perchance, sleepeth", there are plans to re-awaken the group, this time with a slightly wider brief to cover the whole of Kent - and perhaps a little further afield.

There is no formal structure in place as yet, but working closely with the Trust and other area groups we intend starting off in a small way by attending model shows and railway events around the county with a new and innovative display stand, from sometime in the Spring of 2014.
