July Update from the East Group - UPDATED!

EAST Group Chairman Tony Ely recently sent us this report

We have moved into Unit 11 at Friday Wood Farm, Colchester and the old unit at Great Yeldham is in the last stages of being handed back to the landlord. All that needs to be done is a good tidy up and fill the skip and hand the key back and then Great Yeldham will no longer be the East Group's base. Will everyone please note - do not go to Great Yeldham as it will soon be a construction site!

Progress at the new base is as follows:

We have constructed a workshop, metal room, staff room and office. These are almost completed bar the connection of electricity.

On a lighter note, we have kept the swallows in the unit entertained.  The young ones have hatched and are having flying lessons within the unit - the noise is unbearable at times, but it won't be long before they leave. We will await their return next year.

1. Looking into the Machine Room.

2. Racking for finished items and items being worked on.

3. A swallow keeping watch.

4. The container in place.

5. Staff Room and Kitchenette from the outside.

6. Inside showing the Kitchenette and .....

7. .....the Staff Room.

8. & 9. Two views of the workshop.

10. – 13. Getting Van 23 into place. There is not much room for error!

14. Van 23 safely stored.

Thanks to all those who have helped with the move. Without their help the East Group and the L&BR would not have somewhere to manufacture and erect heritage rolling stock.

Tony Ely (Chairman)

Charles Summers has also sent us a report

After about three months exhausting work we have moved into our new home at Colchester.

The final large items to be moved comprised a 20ft steel container and Van No 23.

Considering that the new workshop is half the floor area of the old one and at the end of a cul-de-sac of other farm buildings/workshops it was a bit tight, see photos.

We have built the new insulated woodwork machine shop, mess room, drawing office and metalwork room from scratch complete with all lighting and power points.

The bulk of the work has been carried out by Tony and David Ely, assisted by the volunteers.

Charles Summers.
