NW Group at G-Rail Event Stafford

Peter Ainley and Bob Barnard once again took the NW Group stand to the G Scale Society AGM and narrow gauge event at Stafford County Showground on 20 March 2016.

This year, the (extensive) venue was also hosting a shire horse event on the same day. With two large halls of layouts, traders and society stands, the G-Rail event was busy throughout the day. The event has its origins in G Scale, but has widened its scope to include other (mostly narrow gauge) layouts in all scales. Outside the halls themselves, the Stafford Model Engineering Society track was open, offering train rides on their 7¼ in gauge track, as well as live steam 16mm narrow gauge models, and very impressive Gauge 1 live steam - a Merchant Navy class hauling 12 coaches at speed making a fine sight in spring sunshine.

All day, we were kept busy by visitors to our stand, including quite a number of existing L&B members. We signed up one additional member during the day, and sold some of the latest L&B books.

The L&B Stand a.k.a. the Marie Celeste! Once the show opened, we had no time to take pictures…

A noticeable change from previous years was that it seemed the majority of the (admittedly NG-enthusiast) visitors had visited Woody Bay, had been very impressed, and were well-informed about our achievements and progress. So, rather than trying to encourage people to visit Devon for the first time, it was a case of them telling us when their next visit would be!

A grand day out, in fact, even in spite of nearly an hour and a half queuing on the M6 on the way back …

The next North West Area event will be a meeting at the Friends Meeting House, Manchester, on Saturday 11 June 2016 from 1400 to 1630. Full details will be posted in due course.
