NWAG Successful day in Stafford

The L&B North West Area Group had a successful and enjoyable day at the G Scale Society National Event on Sunday 22 March.

Peter Ainley, Bob Barnard and John Berry were busy most of the day explaining to visitors about the L&B, its revival and its plans for the future. There was also a steady demand for L&B merchandise and promotional leaflets throughout the day.

Although the Stafford show is mainly focused on garden railway scales, with layouts, rolling stock exhibits, specialist traders and society stands, the organisers had this year invited Brian Key to bring his characterful “Ilfracombe East”, L&B-themed 009 layout. Our L&B stand was placed next to this fine layout, so, a corner of one of the exhibition halls had a very strong L&B theme!

In quieter moments, it was most enjoyable for the NW group to watch the narrow gauge trains making their way through an imaginary (but curiously familiar!) landscape including an intermediate station, a viaduct and a river bridge to the Ilfracombe terminus of a fictitious branch from Blackmoor. In Brian’s world, there was also a connection from Minehead to Barbrook, so the occasional GWR train (with Vale of Rheidol rolling stock) could be seen.

Brian and his team supported the successful L&B World event at the Warley Model Railway Show in 2012, and they attend a number of shows each year, promoting the L&B with the layout itself, and by making Woody Bay timetable leaflets available to visitors. At Warley, the operators of all the layouts were fully occupied throughout the show, so the Stafford event was a good opportunity for us to chat to other L&B supporters and modellers.

The NW group’s next show will be the 009 Society AGM and Exhibition, Saturday 18 April 2015, All Saints Parish Hall, Church Road, Rainford, Nr St Helens, Merseyside, WA11 8HE, 10:00-17:00.  Our presence will consist of Barnstaple Town 009 layout and an L&B display and sales stand.
