Thames Valley Area Group Newsletter - Summer 2016

At last, the weather of the past couple of days reminds me of what I think summer was like as a child. Still, the mix of sunshine and showers in recent weeks has apparently helped to encourage visitors in North Devon to visit Woody Bay, so that is good news!

The news in this newsletter is very much of future events, so do please mark the various dates in your diary. I look forward to seeing you at one or more of the venues.

If you do attend one of the exhibitions do please introduce yourself to the folk manning the stand - it is always good to meet fellow L&B enthusiasts. If you are able to spend a few hours helping to tell visitors all about the L&B do please send me an email to let me know which days would suit you.

And now to 'What's On!'

Saturday 3 -Sunday 4 September

We will be taking our stand to the Andover Model Railway Exhibition at John Hanson School, Floral Way, SP10 3PB. This page gives details.

Saturday 24 - Sunday 25 September

This is the weekend of the L&BR Autumn Gala at Woody Bay. I understand that a certain replica L&B Manning Wardle normally based in Wales will be visiting the Gala. Do keep an eye on the L & B website where details will doubtless soon appear. If you have yet to book accommodation in North Devon for that weekend then I suggest you do so right away!

Saturday 1 - Sunday 2 October

Our stand will be in evidence at the Fareham Model Rail Exhibition - please see this page for further details.

Friday 21 - Sunday 23 October

We have been invited to take the stand to the Mid Hants Railway (The Watercress Line) for their Autumn Steam Gala - this page tells you more about that event. We have been allocated the same position as last year, upstairs in the viewing gallery of the carriage shed.

Saturday 19 November

This is the date of the L&BR Thames Valley Group meeting in Newbury. Peter Miles (L&B Trust Chairman) and Mike Buse (Exmoor Associates Chairman) have kindly accepted the invitation to attend our meeting and to give us updates on the railway and trackbed acquisitions for future phases. Peter and Mike will both be travelling considerable distances to be with us so it would be good to have a large crowd that afternoon.

The meeting will start at 2.00 pm and continue until 4.30 pm.

The venue will be the hall of Newbury Baptist Church - more details including a map and the postcode will be found here

The Church car park is quite small but there are several public car parks nearby. The bus station and railway station are just a few minutes walk from the Church.

Admission to the meeting is free. However, L&B books and other L&B items will be available to buy, so please bring some money with you!

The meeting is not restricted to L&B members, so please feel free to invite family and friends who might be interested in the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. By the end of the afternoon they might even decide to become members!

If you don't really know Newbury then you might find this website useful to find somewhere to eat before or after the meeting. You might even wish to bring family or friends with you and send them Christmas shopping while you are in the meeting!

I look forward to receiving offers of help and then to seeing you at one or more events. In the meantime do enjoy the summer!
