Thames Valley Group Newsletter - January 2016

With Christmas and New Year festivities now but a distant memory it is good to think ahead to all the exciting news we hope to hear about 'our railway' in 2016!

Members of the Thames Valley Group have already been 'out on the road', spreading the word about the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 January our stand could be found at Kidlington Scoutrail.

We had many interesting conversations and handed out many leaflets. In addition to L&B leaflets we also distributed leaflets relating to Exmoor and Lynton & Lynmouth. More than one visitor to our stand was heard to say they had forgotten how attractive Exmoor is. We are hopeful they will be visiting Woody Bay in coming months.

It is a good time of year to be publicising the railway as people are now  beginning to plan where to go for weekend breaks and holidays.

Thanks to Roger Beazer and Colin Smith for manning the stand on the Saturday and to John Elvin and Alan Pearce for their help on the Sunday.

Forthcoming events

Saturday 13 February - our stand will be at St. Bartholomew's School for the Newbury Model Railway Exhibition - click here for more details.

Saturday 12 - Sunday 13 March - we will be at Aldworth School for the Basingstoke Model Railway Exhibition - this link gives full information about that show.

Saturday 9 April - we have been invited to take our stand to the Narrow Gauge South Exhibition at Sparsholt College near Winchester. Details of that show will be found here.

Saturday 23 April - L&BR Thames Valley Group meeting in Newbury. Ian Cowling has kindly accepted our invitation to be guest speaker. In addition to being one of the L&BR Trustees Ian has been very much involved in preparing the planning application for the proposed extension so it promises to be a very interesting and informative afternoon.

The meeting will start at 2.00 pm and continue until 4.30 pm.

The venue will be the hall of Newbury Baptist Church - more details including a map and the postcode will be found here

The Church car park is quite small but there are several public car parks nearby. The bus station and railway station are just a few minutes walk from the Church.

L&B books and other merchandise will be available so please do bring money with you!

The meeting is not restricted to L&B Trust members, so please feel free to invite family and friends who might be interested in the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway. By the end of the afternoon they might even decide to become members!

Finally, do remember to regularly have a look at the L&BR website. You will usually find a new item of news has been posted there every week. It is always good to see what is happening in North Devon!

Do say hello to the people manning our stand if you visit one of the model railway exhibitions, and I look forward to seeing you at the Newbury meeting on 23 April!
