Vive le L&B!

This piece just in from Bob Barnard

During the summer months, it is not uncommon to hear French being spoken by visitors to Woody Bay.  But it seems unlikely that many of these visitors knew much about our favourite line before their visit.

One of my former work colleagues, professional railway signal engineer Jacques Poré from Paris, also builds fine standard- and metre-gauge models in H0 and H0m scales.  In addition, Jacques writes articles for magazines, including RMF (Rail Miniature Flash) in France and Continental Modeller in the UK.  He and I exchange photographs of our models from time to time and discuss modelling when we meet.  He tells the story of how he learnt English when a student in the 1970s by working one summer in Hatton’s model railway shop in Liverpool!

Some time ago, Jacques offered to write an article for RMF about my L&B model layouts.  I sent him a copy of the book ‘Modelling the L&B’ and some earlier articles, additional notes and photographs, and he prepared the text of the article.  After making numerous corrections to the French version, we had a draft that was about right.

The article ‘Lynton & Barnstaple au Sud-Ouest de l’Angleterre’ has finally appeared as a Réseau du Mois (Layout of the month) in RMF No. 634 (September 2018).

The eight pages of text include twelve photographs and two track plans.  Space limitations have prevented the intended prototype photographs being included, but even so it is good to have some more publicity across the Channel (articles by Tony Nicholson have appeared in other French magazines in the past).

With luck, a few French modellers who read the article may make a point of visiting the L&B in Devon, on future visits to Britain…
