Young Volunteers

The Lynton & Barnstaple Railway welcomes volunteers from 13 to 25 with an interest in railways, or those who just want to get out and do something a bit different!

Younger volunteers can also work on the railway, but will need to be supervised by their parents.

What Can You Do?

Depending on what you are interested in, there are a wide range of activities around the railway.

  • Assistant Train Guards
  • Loco Cleaners / Trainee Firemen
  • Catering Assistants
  • Painting & Decorating
  • Parks & Gardens

There are also often many opportunities to get involved in one-off jobs and activities connected with events.

What Can’t You Do?

As long as you demonstrate that you take a sensible approach to working on the railway and that you abide by the railway’s Code of Safe Practice, then not very much.

Whilst you can start learning and understanding the workings of locomotives and get involved with working on them, volunteers need to be 16 to be passed as a fireman. After becoming a passed fireman, you can start to learn the skill of driving, but again will need to be 21 to be passed as a driver.

How To Get Started

Firstly you will need to come to a short induction session, so you can get clued-up on all the bits you need to know before doing any work on the railway. As part of this we will need a completed Volunteer Registration Form and, for volunteers under 16, parents will need to sign and return to us a Parental Consent Form.

For information on what to bring and other volunteering details, refer to our Hints & Tips.
