Winter Working Weekend

The weekend-work took place on the recently acquired trackbed at Dean Steep near Barbrook.

The main task for the weekend was to begin the reinstatement of almost ½ mile of fencing and this comprised:

  • Clearance of brush and scrub to expose the fence line.
  • Removal of “blown” posts.
  • Salvaging and repositioning good posts.
  • Installing new straining posts.
  • Completing with wire and droppers.

Here is a report from Sunday 25th November by Nigel Thompson

Despite challenging weather on the Friday and Saturday with heavy rain at times, the mass of 40+ volunteers made some excellent progress with the scrub clearance and fencing projects along the L&BR' s latest  purchase of trackbed between Dean Steep and Barbrook. It was dry on the Sunday and with another great turnout of volunteers the 'Welsh/ Northern" side was completely refenced to allow stock grazing as required by our local friendly farmers.

The above selection of photos shows the fencing underway with some replaced and new concrete strainer-posts, the completed work, views along the trackbed, bonfires to clear the gorse scrub cleared, and all the volunteers enjoying their tea and lunch breaks supplied by our mobile generator and tea urn with Tracey and Graham keeping everyone well catered for today.

Some views taken nearer the Dean Lane end of the trackbed including the beginning of the cutting and cattle creep - Bridge No.78.

Signing-in and guidance notes for volunteers.

Burning debris!

By the afternoon tea break at 3pm a flock of sheep appeared in the field above the trackbed. They were naturally curious as to all the human activity below and we all commented that no doubt they will 'test' the new fence later as soon as everyone has gone home.

In all a superb and excellent working weekend for all and with another section of trackbed prepared for the future....

Nigel Thompson.
