Work in Progress: 8th December

Roadworks TriangleNot much to see!

With Nigel Thompson away visiting relatives this week, Roger Bye has once again sent us this week's report:

1. All change! – The “views” from Woody Bay this week are somewhat different from last week!

2. However, it takes more than a bit of Devon fog to deter the Thursday Gang and after some shunting to move pallets, a works train was assembled for...guess what...more sleeper changes.

3. & 4. Down the line the gang were distant ghostly shapes in the fog...but closer to, it could be seen that the routine of sleeper replacement proceeded apace...

5. ...under Graham Varney’s watchful eye!

Pilton’s Progress

6. The new fuel tank is now complete and fitted with drain taps...

7. ......and fuel pipes secured using custom-made straps...

8. 9. & 10 ...and the vacuum brake piping has been fabricated and installed alongside the engine...past the wheels...and gearbox, heading for the rear vacuum pipe connection.

11. Dick Gunn of the signals construction team was at work affixing linkages to another new signal..

12. & 13 ...whilst Don Newnham and an unseen Trevor Buck commenced dismantling the first of three lever frames prior to refurbishment and reassembly into a single frame.

14. 15. 16. & 17. As the day’s work drew to a close the sound of a diesel engine could be heard and gradually the works train emerged from the fog bringing the track gang back after replacing another 14 sleepers.

Other work in hand this week included further preparations for the imminent Santa Specials, the ongoing carriage maintenance by Barrie Cann and Jim Pounds and maintenance work on AXE.
