Devon Group Rail Trip, 22nd January

Six Devon-based L&BR Trust members took a break from volunteering at the work parties at Woody Bay and Chelfham to have a day out on the trains around Devon.

Using the still excellent value Devon Day Ranger ticket (£6.60), the group travelled from Barnstaple to Exeter then to Axminster and back. Also a return to Exmouth before the 1800 departure back to Barnstaple. (no apologies for some views of the bigger trains in this report!)

1. After arrival at Axminster the unusually formed just a 2-car formation South West Trains Class 159 awaits its departure time to head up to London Waterloo.

2. This month sees diversions off the GW Main line whilst Network Rail carry out some substantial engineering work between Taunton and Exeter including relining inside Whiteball Tunnel. Some First Great Western HST's are diverted to run on the old LSWR main line. The 0906 Paddington-Penzance speeds through Axminster at 1130.

3. Back at Exeter the group take in some heritage culture by walking past the cathedral whilst en route to the pub!

4. Lunch and beer was at a Wetherspoons - The Georges Meeting House, Exeter.

5. Time for an afternoon trip in the sunshine to Exmouth.

6. The group walked to a promenade cafe to enjoy afternoon tea outside - even in January! (It's not all pub crawls!)

7. A scenic coastal view looking into the low sun whilst a fishing boat passes.

Later, back at Exeter and a final pint at The Imperial, we planned a few dates and ideas for forthcoming trips in early 2014.

  • Wed 19 Feb - Half term week, possible trip to South Devon Railway or Pecorama at Beer
  • Wed 19 March - TBA
  • Wed 23 April - Rail trip to Looe
  • Wed 21 May - Dartmouth Steam Railway and River boat trip.

All L&BR Trust members and volunteers are welcome to join us on any of these days out. Contact Nigel Thompson
