Devon Group Rail Trip to Torquay

On Wednesday 3rd May, eight of the regular L&B volunteers using a Devon Day Ranger Ticket sampled the ‘bigger’ trains with a trip from Barnstaple and Exeter to Paignton, Torquay and Lympstone.

1. Although North Devon was historically the province of the Southern Railway, the modern day train operations from Barnstaple are now branded Great Western Railway. Our first train today was 150202 a refurbished unit in the current dark green GWR livery.

2. After Exeter, the schedule gave us time to ride up to Tiverton Parkway for a cheaper tea or coffee from the buffet then the spacious XC HST to Newton Abbot.

3. Then through to Paignton and posing by 150202 again. Too early for lunch but ok for the first beer of the day at the local Wetherspoons.

4. More group posing back at Paignton before the short trip to….

5……Torquay and even more posing now with the GWR guard.

6. A walk into Torquay by the scenic gardens.

7. Lunch with more beer and then a walk back passing the ‘road train’.

8. Waiting at Torquay for our train to Exeter.

9. All together on the Exeter train. There was even time for a trip on the Exmouth branch for yet another pint at the pub at Lympstone Village before an early evening train direct back to Barnstaple by 1910.

The next scheduled trip is Wednesday 31 May with a suggestion for a return to Looe in East Cornwall. Further details contact Nigel Thompson
