Devon Group Summer Rail Trips

Several L&BR Trust Devon Group members have enjoyed their monthly days out to contrasting locations in the West Country. Here's a brief report of two recent trips this summer:

Wed 25 June:
Rail-River cruise on the River Dart

Eleven members journeyed to Paignton for the Rail-River cruise on the River Dart. FGW trains from Barnstaple to Exeter then to Paignton. Round Robin tickets on the Dartmouth Steam and Riverboat company were purchased.

1 & 2. The group enjoy their ride on the Dartmouth Steam Railway.

3. Traction was GWR 2-8-0 tank 5239 seen here running round at Kingswear.

4. Ferry across to Dartmouth, then lunch at the Cherub pub. The main objective today was to sample a cruise on 'Kingswear Castle' - the last coal fired paddle steamer still working daily.

5. On board Kingswear Castle.

6. A viewing hatch shows off all the motion driving to the paddle wheels.

7. The cruise took us to Totnes, where we changed to an open-top bus (a Bristol VR) back to Paignton (time for another pub stop) and then the trains home.

Wed 30th July
Four members enjoyed a rail trip from Barnstaple to Falmouth.

8. It's a long ride from Barnstaple via Exeter and Truro, eventually alighting at Falmouth Town.

9. After a pub lunch, there was time for a walk around Falmouth. The group pose by the harbour.

10. The Falmouth branch is now one of the busiest Devon and Cornwall branch lines now with a half hourly service operated by FGW Sprinters - Class 150s and 153s. At Falmouth Docks the 153s wait to take us back to Truro.

11. Pete and Martin wait as our connection (a FGW HST) to Exeter arrives at Truro.
