Devon Group trip to Newquay Wednesday 18th September

Having achieved all the other Devon and Cornish branch lines in recent rail trips, it was time now to do the Newquay branch. Often marketed as the Atlantic Coast line by the present day GWR, 10 L&B Trust members came along today.

1. After the run from Barnstaple to Exeter and a chance to get a coffee, we waited as our Class 802 arrived with the Penzance train.

2. After changing at Par, we arrived at Newquay.

3. A somewhat truncated and rationalised station these days, the remaining platform does see main line trains such as London bound IETs and Cross Country Voyagers in the summer timetable, although our branch train today was this Class 150.

4. Lunch was at the local Wetherspoons - The Towan Blystra - with several opting for fish and chips with their beer.

5. Then time for a walk around the cliff top with scenic views of the beach and harbour as Chris Shields photographs.

6. A posed shot of the group enjoying the Indian Summer sunshine at Newquay.

7. Back near the station - the Newquay town Road Train is in the background.

Trains back went well, with a quick connection at Par and Plymouth. At Exeter, the hour wait was spent enjoying an ale at the GW Hotel near St David's station.
