Fridaywood Farm Workshop Update July 2019

Lynton & Barnstaple Railway EAST Group

Our volunteer hours for June 2019 totalled 398 which is more than twice what was achieved in May.

The Volunteer hours for the six months to the end of June 2019 were 1131 - again up on last year.

We do need more volunteers!

We have a huge programme of work from the Trust - a total of nine carriages by the opening of the extension to Wistlandpound. To this end we are considering opening the workshop on Saturday mornings to allow those normally at work to enjoy our hobby.

Please let me know if you would like to join us.

On the Workshop front - what a busy month it’s been. Carriage No.5 is getting nearer to completion every day. Our target date for collection is 8th August.

1. Yesterday the roof canvas was glued in a marathon stint by 7 volunteers with support from Malcolm and Lynn Cohen. Whilst doing this, we were able to remove the side covers that have cocooned the carriage during roofing operations. She is looking magnificent.

2. Here is the completed interior of a 1st Class compartment now waiting for the leather upholstery due to arrive by the middle of July. When this is fitted the 1st Class compartments will be locked to keep out the "Hoi polloi"!

There’s lots more to do from 4 coats of gloss to the newly installed roof, to fitting doors, gutters, running boards, door fittings and roof furniture. That does not include coats and coats of varnish to set-off our work.

3. Above are a pair of doors. The one on the left is well over 100 years old, whilst the one on the right is about 12 months. Can you spot the differences? (this is not a competition).

There will be no hiatus when Carriage No.5 leaves - we will plunge straight into the next job, which will be Van 23. Drawings for the underframe are at an advanced stage - the bogies will travel with the vehicle to Woody Bay for refurbishment.

We have arranged our first outside social event for some time - a Harwich member has invited fellow L&B membersto his Garden Railway on Saturday 3rd August.

Please let me know if you wish to attend and I’ll get back to you with more details
