Thames Valley Group

Welcome to the Thames Valley Support Group

The Thames Valley Group’s activities take place mainly within a 30 – 40 mile radius of Basingstoke .

Twice a year we have an area group meeting in Newbury and look to invite a guest speaker.  Past guests have included the L&BR Trust and Company Chairman and the Chairman of Exmoor Associates. (Read more about Exmoor Associates HERE).  Our meetings enable attendees to hear the latest news about the railway and to ask questions directly of the management. Attendees also have the opportunity to meet other members and to purchase L&B merchandise. These meetings are also open to non L&BR Trust members in the hope that they will decide to join us. The meeting-room is just a short walk from Newbury rail and bus stations.

We have an Exhibition and Sales Stand which we take to Model Railway Exhibitions and other venues such as the Didcot Railway Centre and the Mid Hants Railway. Members are encouraged to help man the stand, especially if it is at a venue close to where they live.

As well as telling visitors all about the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway we suggest that they become members of the L&BR Trust.  We also do our best to encourage them to take a short break or holiday on Exmoor and to visit Lynton and Lynmouth and, of course, to take a ride on ‘our railway’ whilst there.

Thames Valley Group Meeting Report

It was great to see so many L&B members (plus a handful of non-members) who gathered in the hall of Newbury Baptist Church for our recent meeting on Saturday 22 April.

Our speaker for the afternoon was L&B stalwart Paul Gower. With the aid of transparencies Paul talked for over two hours with just a short break in the middle for refreshment. Such is Paul's knowledge of the L&B and so extensive his collection of photos that I am tempted to say he spoke mostly without hesitation, deviation or repetition!

Thames Valley Group - LATEST

Spring has arrived, yet some days it seems like summer and on other days perhaps more like winter. I guess it is what we delight in referring to as 'British Weather'!

Since the last newsletter the Thames Valley Group stand has been visible at a number of events.

Thames Valley Group - January Newsletter

Dear L&BR Supporter

All of a sudden we are almost at the end of January. Who knows where the time goes?

Earlier this month we took the Thames Valley Exhibition stand to Scoutrail at Kidlington. Many of the visitors to our stand have been to Woody Bay in the last couple of years and were very interested to discover how the proposed extension is faring. Many thanks to Roger Beazer and Colin Smith for setting up the stand and manning it on the Saturday and to John Elvin and Alan Pearce for their help on the Sunday.

Thames Valley Area Group meeting in Newbury – Saturday 19 November

It was good to see so many Lynton & Barnstaple Railway (L&BR) members and non-members gather in Newbury Baptist Church Hall on the afternoon of Saturday 19 November. The attendance register showed that some folk had travelled from as far afield as Bristol, Corby, Hambledon and New Milton, such is the magnetism of the L&B! Newbury has proved to be a good location for these meetings, both for those travelling by car and for those using public transport.

Thames Valley Area Group Newsletter - Summer 2016

At last, the weather of the past couple of days reminds me of what I think summer was like as a child. Still, the mix of sunshine and showers in recent weeks has apparently helped to encourage visitors in North Devon to visit Woody Bay, so that is good news!

The news in this newsletter is very much of future events, so do please mark the various dates in your diary. I look forward to seeing you at one or more of the venues.

Thames Valley Area Group Newsletter - Spring 2016

It is good to look out of the window and see the variety of flowers which are already in bloom and all the leaves which are suddenly making an appearance on trees and shrubs. It might not be very warm yet, but it certainly feels more like Spring than it did just a couple of weeks ago!

News items on the L&BR website tell us that visitor numbers are already up compared with 2015. We don't know what prompted those folk to visit Woody Bay, but we like to think some are the result of us talking to visitors to our stand at various exhibitions in recent months.
