2nd January, 2026
As part of the expansion of volunteer opportunities in 2026 at the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway we're pleased to announce that we're launching our youth volunteer team for 13 to 17 year-olds living in the North Devon area.
This brand new initiative will provide a stimulating and exciting environment for younger people designed to develop their skills, confidence and experience at Woody Bay station on glorious Exmoor.
The structured youth volunteer programme will help you:
Our youth volunteers will meet at Woody Bay station (just off the A39 between Blackmoor and Lynton) every second Saturday in the month from April to October from 10am to 4pm.
Each session will cover a key part of the railway's activities and over the 2026 season our youth volunteers will be involved in the primary aspects of what keeps our world famous heritage railway in tip-top condition and how we deliver a first class customer experience.
Parents or guardians are welcome to attend sessions so that they can see the valuable contribution the youth team will make to the running of our railway.
Youth team members don't necessarily need have to have an interest in heritage steam railways. All that’s required is enthusiasm and an inquisitive mind to do something new and worthwhile as part of an enthusiastic group of young people. Plus, there’s a train ride included at the end of every session!
So, if you’re interested in becoming a Lynton and Barnstaple Railway Youth Team member please come along and join us at our launch event at Woody Bay station café at 10am to 1pm on Saturday 31st January 2026.
You'll meet the team, find out more about the planned activities, be able to ask questions and register your interest for the 2026 season. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.
If you have any queries in the meantime please click this link to send an email directly to us.
Please note: we will look to expand the programme beyond the North Devon area in 2027
