Mixed Traction Day

As well as our steam stalwarts ‘Lyn’, ’Sir George Newnes’ and ‘Axe’ the L&BR now has four very useful diesel engines at Woody Bay. These have only seen rare use in passenger services but this year we’re going to change that with a brand new event!

On Sunday the 17th of May we will be running our usual steam services as well as extra diesel services. The final details are being made to the timetable however this timetable will be published very soon.

‘Pilton’ will run with a single carriage giving a rare chance to ride behind our ’thunderbird’ engine, our Hunslets  'Haddon Hall' and D6652 will be in use on brake van trips and the newest addition to the fleet, Hunslet prototype No 1 will be working around the station.

Diesel Brake Van Rides

New for 2026 Break Van Rides!

We’re really pleased to be introducing something a little different for visitors to enjoy at this year’s Lynton and Barnstaple Mixed Traction Day.

We’ll be offering break van rides from Woody Bay Station, giving you the chance to step aboard a working brake van and experience the railway in a completely unique way. The ride will take you through the platform and sidings before heading back to where you started, offering a short but memorable glimpse behind the scenes of operations on the line.

It’s a relaxed informal experience perfect for families, enthusiasts, or anyone who simply wants to enjoy the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of the railway from a different perspective.

These rides are available on a donation basis and every contribution is warmly appreciated. All funds raised will go directly towards supporting future events and the ongoing care and development of the Lynton and Barnstaple Railway.

There is no requirement to pre-book participation is available on the day.

Steam & Diesel Footplate Rides

Ever wondered what it’s like to stand where the action happens? Join the crew on the footplate for a short ride and see the railway from the driver’s perspective. A rare chance to get up close with either the steam or diesel locomotive in action.

Footplate rides will be part of our standard service timetable and include a return journey from Woody Bay Station to Killington Lane approximately 20 minutes. Due to the size of the engine there will be one footplate passenger for each service. Pre-booking is recommended as it will be available on a first come first served basis.

Ticket price: £42.50 per person (Spaces are limited 1 per train service)
