Conservation of the Barnstaple (L&B) Signal Box – Part 5

Published: 3rd October, 2025

A minor milestone was reached today (2nd Oct 2025) in the project to conserve and re-erect the ex-Barnstaple (L&B) signal box.

Having completed the repairs to the mortise joints at lintel level, the first corner post was stood up on the foundation ring beam. This is at the front corner at the Barnstaple end.

(The large wooden angle bracket to the left of the post is a temporary aid to construction and will be removed once the building frame is complete).

The rear corner post on the same gable end has also  been repaired and extended and is almost ready to be erected. Today the numerous old nail holes were being  filled  ahead of  final finishing and priming.

Lastly, some new floorboards have been prepared to replace damaged and rotten sections  of the boards recovered from Umberleigh with the box.
